What to Expect at Your Child's Dental Appointment
Setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Your child’s first dental appointment can feel like a big step—it’s a great opportunity to introduce them to a lifetime of positive dental habits. Whether your little one is talking up a storm or just learning to sit still, we’re here to help make those first visits a smooth and encouraging experience.
If you’re wondering what to expect (or when to schedule that first visit), you’re not alone. We’re here to answer the most common questions and help you feel prepared.
When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting—whichever comes first. However, many families feel most comfortable waiting until age 2 or when their child is more verbal and responsive.
Our practice provides comprehensive care for the whole family, including individual patient visits for children ages 2 and up. These early appointments are designed to build trust, ease anxiety, and help little ones feel comfortable and confident in the dental chair from the start.
What Happens at a First Visit?
The first appointment is usually short, gentle, and education centered. The goal is to help your child become familiar with the sights, sounds, and people in a dental office.
Here’s what typically happens:
Warm Welcome: We’ll take time to introduce your child to the environment. They may sit in the chair or on your lap, depending on what makes them most comfortable.
Gentle Examination: We’ll check their mouth, teeth, gums, jaw, and bite to ensure everything is developing normally. If there are any teeth present, we’ll look for signs of decay or concerns with alignment.
Parental Guidance: We’ll discuss brushing habits, teething, pacifier use, thumb-sucking, and nutrition tips to promote good oral health.
